Jeudi 16 décembre, Sibylle a travaillé dur pour son projet d'histoire américaine : il fallait choisir un sujet ayant un rapport avec la colonisation .... et elle a trouvé : l'histoire de l'indienne Pocahontas ....
C'est l'histoire d'une gamine de 11 ans, fille d'un grand chef Powhatan. En 1607, un bateau de la Virginia Compagny accoste dans la baie de Cheasapeack et construit une ville du nom de Jamestown. John Smith est capturé par la tribu des Powhatans et condamné à mort. Pocahontas s'opposera à son exécution et deviendra son amie. (...) Par la suite elle est capturée et se convertie au christiannisme... elle épouse ensuite John Rolfe dont elle aura un fils ... ils reviennent en Angleterre où elle rencontre le roi James the 1st. Mais lorsqu'ils repartent vers le nouveau monde, elle succombe à une vilaine grippe ... elle n'a que 21 ans .... Sibylle a réalisé ce beau poster toute seule grâce à Publisher ... et elle a écrit son projet en me le dictant : 6 pages écrites sur ordi ...

Today, I’m going to talk about Pocahonta’s life, were she leaved, her parents and her people.

B-Biography
· Pocahontas was an Indian princess, the daughter of Powhatan, the powerful chief of the Algonkian Indians in Virginia. She was born around 1595 to one of Powhatan’s many wives. They name her Matoaka. But she is better known as Pocahontas, which means “Little wanton” (playful little girl).
· Pocahontas probably, saw Europeans for the first time in May 1607 when the Englishmen landed at Jamestown. The one she met was named John Smith. She saved his life as he was captured by the Powhatan. They became good friends.
· Relations between the Europeans and the Indians were at first good and she delivered messages from her father to the colony.
· But unfortunately, relations between the white men and the Indians started to deteriorate and Pocahonta’s visits were less frequent. In October 1609, a gunpowder explosion injured John Smith forcing him to return to England. And Pocahontas was told that John Smith was dead.
· Pocahontas apparently married an Indian named Kocoum in 1610 and she lived in Potomac country in Virginia. But an English man from Jamestown, (Samuel Argall), learnt where she was, and he decided to kidnap Pocahontas and hold her for a ransom. It was here that she began her education in the Christian faith and that she met John Rolfe in July 1613.
· After almost a year of captivity, Sir Tomas Dale brought 150 armed men and Pocahontas into Powhatan’s territory to obtain her entire ransom. Attack by Dale’s armed men they destroyed a lot of villages and burned many houses in killed Indians. Pocahontas returned to her home. She told her brothers that she was treated well and that she was in love with John Rolfe. Powhatan gave her, his consent to this wedding.
· Pocahontas converted to Christianity and was baptized by the name Rebecca and later married to John Rolfe in April, 5, 1614.
· John and Pocahontas returned to England with their little son, Thomas Rolfe in the spring of 1616. When she arrived in London she met the king James 1st and also she met John Smith who she believed had died eight years before.
· After seven months, Rolfe decided to return his family to Virginia. In March 1617, they set sail, but Pocahontas was very sick and she died in the boat. She was 22 years old. She was buried in a churchyard in Gravesend, England.
C-Popular legend
After her death, a lot of stories talked about this little girl who saved John Smith’s Life. Because of that and because of her wedding with John Rolfe, she was an important link between English men and Indians. Pocahontas is a part of the Virginia History.
